December 10, 2007 ZURICH (Reuters) - Novartis's Glivec/Gleevec (imatinib) stopped cancer progression in all the patients between years 5 and 6 of a pivotal leukaemia trial, according to data presented on Sunday at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting in Atlanta. The patients taking part in the trial for the most common type of chronic myeloid leukaemia were free of progression during their sixth year of treatment, data showed. "Now we have data that shows per patient, as they go from year five to year six, absolutely none of them progressed to the accelerative forms of the disease," Novartis oncology head David Epstein told Reuters. No new safety problems were identified between the 5-year report and the latest analysis. Copyright 2008 Reuters. Click for Restrictions.
