Relay for (Second) Life

Fundraising to fight cancer is flourishing in Second Life, a virtual world where people’s created characters live an alternative existence

If there is a perfect world in which to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, an online realm known as Second Life may be it.

Second Life Relay for Life empowers those who may not be able to physically participate in the Relay due to their health to come and walk in the virtual Relay on the Internet, says Randal Moss, the American Cancer Society’s director of futuring and innovations. “They can participate and enjoy the event from the comfort and safety of their home, even their hospital bed.”

Online fundraising events for the Second Life Relay include those that might be seen in a real community such as live and silent auctions, a dance, fashion show, door-to-door requests, and in-kind donations. But online, the traditional can be done with a twist. ...
