CONNECTIONS / SNIPPETS

  • Cancer survivors and their loved ones connected last winter in Colrain, Mass., at a “Weekend Renewal Retreat” hosted by Forest Moon: Celebrating Survivorship (www.forestmoon.org).

Through writing, creative arts activities and group discussions, participants learned how to nurture themselves, says co-founder Cindy Blood. The retreat
also featured guided mindfulness meditation, a percussion ensemble, and
walking to promote physical and emotional well-being.

Forest Moon, a nonprofit founded by Blood, a breast cancer survivor, and
her husband, has served more than 200 individuals since beginning programs
in 2006. The programs are generally free, with the exception of a small registration
    fee for some retreats.

According to one participant: “Food and rest space is really what I needed.
Guided meditations were really good and helpful to me for staying present
and stress reduction. Sharing stories of each other’s experience and just sharing
light and love with each other is so helpful. I am very inspired by the stories
    I’ve heard this weekend.”

  • Lung and breast cancer survivor Stephanie Hineline, along with her support team and daughter Athena, led the “Breakaway Mile” in February for the finish of the Sacramento stage of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California. ...
